Three main types of chemotherapeutic agents are used:

  • Cytotoxic agents: These interfere with the mitotic process of cancer cells, preventing them from dividing and proliferating.
  • Antimetabolites: These disrupt the metabolic pathways within cancer cells, inhibiting their ability to grow and replicate.
  • Immunomodulators: These enhance the body’s immune response against tumor cells, increasing the natural resistance of the body to the cancer.

  • Intravenous  (IV)
  • Intra-arterial  (IA)
  • Oral  (tablet form)
  • Intramuscular  (IM)
  • Subcutaneous  (SC)
